Just to verify, when we take it out of the freezer (before reflux) we put the flask in room temp water. Then, assuming I don't have a condenser, I would tighten the rubber stopper and apply heat to the flask until it is at 60C for 2 hours.

Sounds easy enough, this is the only step that caused me to stumble a bit, once I do it Im sure it'll come to me.

You can NEVER understand the Forces of Nature if you DO NOT UNDERSTAND yourself first. It is that simple.

If you don't have a reflux tube -- you're going to want to watch out for pressure build up.
I would suggest a cooling mechanism of some sort on the top of a flask -- or maybe a failsafe "pop top", so that the glass/flask doesn't explode. 

I don't want anyone getting hurt by being careless (by not calibrating/compensating for the pressure build up), Please be careful.

The Masonry jars worked beautifully, because they are pretty pressure & heat resistant -- Plus there is a large space in the top of the jar for the gas to cruise around on top. 
I used a bag of ice atop the masonry jar (was not my idea though) -- and the metal lid allowed the top to get rid of heat pretty well.

For your 'hiccup' in the process, The reason you would take the flask out of the ice water -- and let it sit in the room temp. water for about 5 mins or so, is so that the flask does not shatter from thermal shock.
