How low tech can you get?   Commercial growers of bromeliads, including pineapple plants, use ethylene to induce flowering. Plants can be induced to flower either by treatment with the gas in a chamber, or by placing a banana peel next to the plant in an enclosed area.

Some pencil sharpeners are made with magnesium?   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium  its there about halfway down in a picture.
we may be able to get magnesium in a less reactive form than metal ribbon.
