Got some stranded wire, wound a new grenade (48/24/12) on a smaller diameter PVC; inductance is about 87uH.  With ground, capacitor and diode connected to the coil, I get a ringing frequency about 2.2Mhz... but I cannot really find a strong resonant point, even at that it's only like 4.5V out.... horrible.  The tube was closer to the size of the one used in the aquarium video... actually it might be a little smaller.
going to wind another; have a slightly larger tube; actually going to chop the PVC on the first, and wind another on that too... but a little longer... also didn't route the wires through the coil.
The ringing I get happens without signal generator running...

Also revisiting the old video; why are there 3 wires coming out? (not that it's important, since ruslan and akula don't have such complexities.
I wonder though is the coil of wire around a spool of wire a tesla transformer of sorts?
....
If you increase the inductance of the primary, without increasing the relation of the inductance to the secondary  (use just one turn) isn't that just going to limit the effective current you can push?
