I am going to apologise in advance for this video. For some reason I could not upload an HD version, the soundtrack has almost been wiped out by the electrostatic field. Most importantly, I omitted the fact that the earth ground plays a HUGE part in the simple phenomenon regarding the capacitive effect!!

What is also interesting that a few days ago when the weather was a lot different I got some very different results !! The electrostatic field was so great that my hair was standing on end !! Barometric pressure or humidity ?? Even stranger is the fact that dear Magpwr was also looking into the same area as I !!

Did I mention that my TC pictured above has a MOT-DC primary supply of less than 3 kiloVolts? Sorry.

Yes, high humidity will cause surfaces to adsorb a little layer of moisture, and this moisture, along with the ionic impurities found on most surfaces, will cause a convenient path for high voltages to find their way to ground. This will prevent charge from building up on non-conductive surfaces (they are no longer nonconductive) so you won't get that big E-field that makes your hairs stand on end. Moist air in itself isn't particularly conductive but the layer of moisture that it leaves on surfaces makes them sufficiently conductive to "kill" static charges and can even render electrostatic generators inoperative. So carry a blow-dryer with you, if you intend to do electrostatic demonstrations in high humidity environments! When the air is very dry and cold, then you get the high field buildup and the "hair effect", and electrostatic machines will work really well.

Here's another low-voltage TC, this time fully solid state, no spark gap, running on about 26 volts, 2 amps DC input. It runs at about 4 MHz and is optimized for what you are calling "radiant" energy, rather than big sparks of half a megavolt.
