555 will work, but it's only a push (or pull) not push-pull... the tl494 output is like mated 555 times that each is 180 degrees offset... they share the same duty cycle on each half pulse...
it does work to drive to resonance.. there would be slightly better power transfer if you had a synchronized pull on the other side....


can also play with using the full winding on the primary instead of half... moving where power is connected...


It's not really that the 555 output would be 50% and turn on one and then the other... there's a dead time between off of one and the on of the other in the tl494...  (gap between T1 and T2 conduction times)

How much magnetism do you have at the top of the Tesla coil?  By my understanding there is mainly HV (static electricity) as the current goes opposite way. Put your compass on the coil and you will see no movement at all - I have already tried that. This device is based on High potential energy. The TV choke (LC resonant)  makes that potential to move (creates current)

It is just i have not enough space with my current setup. But anyway today i will make my tesla again on the other side.. It was more to mention a possible usage of the opposite wire turns at the top of tesla.

John, i called it magnetic interaction for everyone to understand. You can call it emission of particles. From south you emit positives, and from north negatives. (see magnetic currents, Ed. Leedskalnin) See Urfa's video how strong interaction this is, even when he disconnects his radiator.

somebody was here suggesting the design of push-pul with just only  IR 2153 as on the picture below. Would that work??  I do not have TL494 at home yet so I am looking for some quick alternative :)
