Just compare that drawing with a transformer.  Is not north and south poles are shorted in a transformer?   How does a transformer work? 
Remove the top and bottom of a transformer then it will resemble the coil which I have drawn.  Then if you create variation of flux with north pole on one side and south pole on the other side, it has to generate power like a transformer  isn't it?
