tao,  that is not the device.  It is described as a 'test rig' and may not even include the device.

I guess that the device IS based on the patent for the actuator.  My reading of the site and the peswiki suggests that they have applied for patents on parts of the technology since it is not possible to patent an ou device.

Looking at the actuator design and extrapolating from that I would suggest a machine with a circular array of magnets and a circular array of coils seperated by a rotating disk with co-netic shields.  The shields would switch the magnetic fields off as they pass between the magnets and coils, thus causing a changing magnetic flux in the coils.  Steorn claims that it is possible to move a magnetic shield from the field of one magnet to the field of the next using minimal energy (and thus, we presume, allowing the use of the larger, switched magnetic field, to provide excess energy).

Seems simple enough if the underlying assumption is correct.

with the better materials available today, this would seem possible.

  the unit you suggest, does it need something to turn the rotor or would you build that in some how?  maybe we need to build something (motor) first, then apply gen to it.   the above uses a small motor to turn the shield which allows a larger output gen to work.  which will come first, the chicken or the egg?

yes tbird, a motor is needed to spin the rotor.  If the principle works, though, then it should be possible to take power from the coils to drive the rotor.

You give great links, tbird.  That top image is exactly the kind of thing I was suggesting.

It should be easy enough to test this idea:  simply position a coil next to a magnet and pass a shield between them.  That tells us that a current is induced by the changing magnetic field.  Then get a little more sophisitcated and measure the drag on the shield.
