Commercially available Lead crystal batteries specifications

I think if one studies the cycle lifetimes vs depth of discharge curves for each battery
product it shows that the lifetimes are not nearly the same for identical products and
highly dependent on the average % depth of discharge. AGM batteries have nearly the
same curves as for flooded acid/lead. The touted Edison Iron/KOH batteries which are still
manufactured by the China, have graph curves are not that much better and very
similar to graphs presented for the lead/crystal batteries. 

We can not all of us have your experience with all the products we may want to use, so the
rest of us are going to have to rely on manufactures specification sheet data. As long as
you agree that there is a high and non-linear relationship of battery lifetime to cycle
count and % depth of discharge, I think we can agree. A unitary fixed lifetime rating
is only valid for a battery that is seldom/never used such as in a UPS application. Applications
in the alternative energy field such as a buffer battery for a house, this is almost never the case.
Battery arrays that require 3 to 4 times rated power just to improve their lifetimes cannot be
economically justified.

Lithium Batteries in the future will almost certain be and are now almost price competitive with
acid/lead for buffer applications.

Your comments are good and I quite agree.

Frankly, I'm a great fan of the Lead-Acid Battery
and use them almost exclusively.  When one
becomes well acquainted with their needs and
learns how to maintain them they can be
incredibly reliable.

The DELTEC Product Description is actually
quite informative if one reads it carefully paying
particular attention to the Q and A at the final
page.  It's ruggedized for deep cycle application
and does use some proprietary chemistry for
both the electrolyte solution and the plate
structures.  It seems to be a quality product
providing it isn't excessively priced.

Their use of "Lead Crystal" terminology as a
sales gimmick is a bit misleading.

Good question.  According to their literature
it is designed to be a deep cycle battery
therefore it should be able to sustain many
more cycles of charge/discharge than the
typical gel battery or agm battery.

But, as always, it depends upon the charging
methodology to assure that the battery is
fully charged each time without excessive
gassing and consequent potential loss of
water from the electrolyte.  Many charging
devices are in fact somewhat abusive in
that they are not able to fully reverse all
sulfation and equalize the cells with each charge.

Mr mjlorton has made a youtube video where he performs a side by side comparison test between a real 22Ah Chinese crystal cell
acid/lead battery and a run-of-the-mill 18ah AGM battery. The results are surprisingly positive for the lead crystal cell
battery. And unfortunately, not so suprisingly - very negative for this small untyped AGM 18Ah acid/lead battery. The cc-battery
needs to be run against a higher quality acid/lead solar or traction battery if a low Ah capacity match could be found for it.
