I think the most obvious question here is what is the generator or motor that was modified to create this design if there was one. If we had a model number we would all have some place to start. Or at least a manufacturer.

Dont believe Ive seen which poles are which on the mags. If 2 were N and 2 were S facing out, cogging would be nearly impossible to turn the thing. But, if all are say N or S out, when the iron portions go between the mags and coils, they just may be repelled a bit instead of attracted. The moving iron parts have a magnetic path to each other. Like poles repel.

So there can be a balance there. Say we had a 1 in by 1/2 in  by 1/2 in iron bar. Put a small mag(N) on one end, then another at the other end, both N in.  They will stick. But the bigger the mags are, the less stick there will be till the mags as you try larger ones will repel from the iron bar.  So there can be magnetic switching this way without great cogging effects.
