Perhaps....an advantage is being recognized and exploited this way:

The electrical resistance of pure water is relatively high, causing electrolysis of such to waste energy in the form of Joule heating resulting from said electrical resistance.

The electrical resistance of urine is somewhat lower, therefore less energy is lost to said resistance during electrolysis.


Perhaps a similar advantage exists in electrolysis of water containing ANY good-functioning electrolyte, which makes available generous quantities of dissolved ions, not just urinistic electrolytes and their ions.
