Seemingly cheaper than gasoline until you factor in your time, energy, and resources to produce the ethanol.

They claim you can distill 4 gallons of fuel per day from 20 gallons of liquid raw materials. The boiler in the still is 4 gallons. With a still that size, you can only distill at most about 3/4 liter of fuel per hour--so you could theoretically distill 4 gallons per day if you spend 24 hours in front of the stove to distill it. Yes, you can distill your own fuel from fermented apple juice. It takes about 20 pounds of fruit to produce 1 gallon of apple juice, so you will need about 400 pounds of apples to produce 4 gallons of fuel. That's about as many apples as a mature, healthy tree can produce in one year. You'll need to spend considerable effort to collect, chop, and press these apples into cider to get your 20 gallons of cider, assuming you have your own cider press (which costs about $500). If you plan on distilling a 100 gallons per year, you better plant 25 apple trees now to plan for it (and wait about 10 years until these trees are producing a full 400 pounds of appples per year). Of course, you'll spend 25 continuous days distilling the fuel that you will use to avoid riding a bicycle to work, and to the grocery store to buy apples.

If you want to spend less time distilling your own fuel in the kitchen, you can opt for one of the larger stills, which cost about $400-$600, and let you distill about 2 gallons of fuel at a time. It will still take several hours to produce 2 gallons of fuel.

Better still (no pun intended), build a still that will "run a stream of whiskey as big as a broom handle." Check out the book "More Mountain Spirits" by Joseph Earl Dabney, which has detailed instructions on making your own still that will ferment and distill several hundred gallons at a time. These home-built stills can run the distilling process from a wood-fueled fire, avoiding the reliance on fossil fuels or the electric stove to run the still. They can also be built far cheaper than $250.

I am now a distributor for these stills. It takes very little energy to distill the alcohol from the mash. Apples is surely not the way to go as you have pointed out. The guy who builds these stills tells me that he uses cracked corn bought from a feed store. I think rice might be even cheaper because it produces more alcohol. These still will be demonstrated at Inventor's Weekend. Alcohol will be made and will be used in an electric generator.

I see, sounds good,
maybe oyu can use solar heaters to cook the alcohol off, so it would need no external power !
Maybe also chopped gras could work ?
So verybody who has a garden with a lawn could use that. That would be great.
