Hi guys,

energy efficiency and energy monitoring have long been a passion of mine and I thought to write a simple application which will do monitoring of the power usage in your home. In contrast to all available solutions out there, I want a software/hardware system that is openly available, cost-effective and based on freedom (open standards and communication protocols, hardware indipendent, open source). The software is not a problem, but I have long wondered on how to go with the sensors/devices that will measure the power. I don't have much expertise in electrical systems, so I decided to ask you guys on what do you think would be a good solution for this kind of scenario?

Of course, the best option would be very cheap, off the shelf sensor, which I can hook to the pc. Or is it easy to build such thing by myself?

I appreciate all your time!

Regards,
Angel
