What burden do you speak of? No one is forcing him to do anything and he is alive and well.  Your deification of SM is unwarranted. We may have valuable research data throughout the years but no working replication. That is what the facts boil down to.

If SM has a free energy device he is in an awesome position to release it for the benefit of mankind. His name could be written in the history books as the founder of free energy and enabler of human space travel. What does he do? He trades the opportunity for a few gold coins and remains quiet.

For example, in the US when publication of a patent would be detrimental to national security then the inventions are to be kept secret. I guess national security could be interpreted in pretty broad terms, like for example economical security or stability of established industries if it would affect many people or some with much money.
