Sorry Jeff, banks are much older than this, they existed in some form or another since Baylonian times. Romans, Phoenicians, Egyptians they all had them in one form or other often in the form of money changers and money lenders. Babylonians actually used cheques which could be converted to currency as the need arose and freed merchants from traveling with large amounts of currency as a guard against robbery.

The modern term bankrupt comes from the Latin banca rotta, meaning a bank with no money.

I stand corrected Hans.  I've been preoccupied with the Knights recently.  In any case my point was that banking is not some new, modern concept.  It has been around for a very long time (which you rightly point out goes back many centuries). 

Many people now are so anti-bank that they are confusing banking with indebtedness.  Banks do not force people to make loans.  It is personal greed which drives personal debt and banks play off of that greed.  I am not, however defending any predatory lending practices which I am sure have occurred in some institutions.

We are probably well off topic here anyway.  And if the visitors show up on the 14th maybe we won't need $$ any more

banca rotta literally means broken bank. In the spirit of italian language that should be translated as a bank that is broken into peaces and the money has "rolled" out. Like a piggy bank after a quick raid by a minor looking for a change to buy an ice cream.

Can't believe that that monkey alien is still hoping to convince people that his schizofrenia is reality. When I was a kid the next door  neighbour was hiding from "them" who were following him with antennas from London...He hang himself one day to screw "them" up.
