magnetic fields are "conducted" thru metal,
they don't penetrate thru metals generally
speaking.  you can visualize the effect by
picturing a 2x4 laid on top of a balloon.
the balloon wouldn't reach out the other
side of the 2x4, but would appear "flattened",
which is how a magnetic field looks when you
place an iron bar on top of a magnet.  what
makes MuMetal (and similar alloys) unique, is
that they don't magnetize themselves (eg, create
their own magnetic field) in the process of
conducting a magnetic field.

i do not see any mention of the material used
for his "shielding", nor any mention of MuMetal.
unfortunately, i don't have graphics, and i can't
gather enough from the explanation at the link above
to understand this device, or understand why it may
or may not work -- i am using a Lynx text browser.

the concept i put forth should work to
varying degrees regardless of the quality
of the shielding so long as as some degree
of shielding is in effect, so long as the
south poles in the "rim" have a more
powerful magnetic field exposed than
the north poles.

I have a hard copy but it's no longer on the web.  The basic idea is using neo magnets as a core for a coil (that is what is inside the white tubes in the picture).  The two cores are brought close together so they combine flux densities, a rotating blade of magnetorestrictive metal (Don's words) is ran between the two cores which causes a drop in flux thus inducing potential in the coil.  That was the theory and he built several but none worked.

The most promising imo is the Kromrey Generator in which John Bedini managed over 1,200% over unity.  He found the patent intentionally flawed but hasn't released the details and I'm not bright enough to figure the problem out.

his device is not the same as i suggested.
i am generating movement (a spinning top),
and he was trying to generate electricty via
induction from what i can understand -- and
i think i see why his idea did not work - eg,
turning flux on-and-off is not the same as a
conductor moving thru a magnetic field, nor
is it the same as moving a magnetic field
thru a conductor -- a magnetic field doesn't
"move" when it is cut on-and-off.
