Are you sure its was zener? I say this bcoz  zener is not really used on avalanche mode on normal operation because it consume lots of power. There is much better than zener that consume less power and has negative resistance characteristic like neon bulb, spark gap, Diac, Triac and SCR. Another thing, the coil is in non-inductive which reduces the magnetic field.
