Dave, here is a simple thing you might want to try.

It was a circuit that is in the sim library and I added the 2 coils to simulate the primary I described earlier.

You can drive it with an ac signal from a gen or PC audio gen, unless you are thinking of something else. PWM chip will get a pulse output rather than just flip flop. But if it is flip flop, then this should work. Then we can make an ac gen circuit that fits the design after.

Transistors or fets  Just start off with 10k resistors inline with the gates of the fets and see what happens, let me know what voltages you want for input. Transistors should have resistors also. 
Just something simple that gets it done. ;]

Yeah resonace is allways the answer !!!
but cannot be achieved if only small parameter is wrong or missing
what it would take is detailed bluprintes (to the smallest smitherin)
of some successfull experiment. Although I'm planing to "jump" on resonance of second
third etc. degree, I've decided making something really simple but powerfull.
While not in experiments please do check:

This is probably my ignorance of how a flip flop works but it looks like this circuit pushes and pulls, we need a circuit that pushes out one leg then switches and pushes out the other leg.
At least this is the way I had it pictured.

Im not sure if resonance is critical here, I think SM used 60 hz , he had no large cap bank to bring down the frequency, his circuit was very simple, its in the winding of the coils.

If this system was brought into resonance the power would be incredibly dangerous.

Also he used an iron core and iron cannot be used in high frequency situations.

We need the phase angle to be 90 degrees out, so the two coils need to reflect this each firing 30 times per second giving us 60 hz.
I know this is a lot to ask, and Im not asking anyone to build it, but are my thoughts on how SM powered his coils,
But to make the trifilar coils work they need to have a forward pulse from the center legs carrying amperage out one side and voltage out the other.
I feel if low voltage is used the coils will need a core, but with higher voltage air core would work.
