The ideal frequency should be where 1 and 3 hit the primary at the same time, its all about timing.
The reason for the diode on the primary leg is to keep current from the free ended coil from killing the driver.

The fact that inductive loads need to be diode suppressed is a disappointment.
The spike is just what we need.
I'll stick with Tesla for now.

What Im wondering is does the open ended coil have to be wound on the core, could it be outside the inductive path.
