Here is the example in Circuit Sim. Free sim by Falsatad. And it is working correctly.

The scope shots are in order as...

Left inductor in left circuit in series with diode

Middle inductor in series with load in the left circuit

Right inductor in series with load in right circuit

We can clearly see that the inductor in series with the diode does not allow for freewheeling. It impedes the load inductors field collapse currents. Where in the right circuit you can see the freewheeling happening without the diode inductor.

I used the Stop function in the sim to activate and deactivate both circuits at the same times.

At what frequency?
Were the coils brought into resonance with each other

Were the coils placed in an ionized atmosphere.

This is a buckboost circuit.
The main objective is to get the battery out of the loop.
