Hi all,

It occurs to me that cat converters may be the perfect DIY water cracking devices for electrolysis.
All cat converters contain PLATINUM which is one of the best water cracking /dissociation catalysts.

What if we try getting a new cat, cutting it up and extracting the internal material, then slicing it up to make HHO plates in a HHO cell?

It seems to me that even allowing for the rhodium and other metals in the cat, the ammount of platinum should make this idea viable.

Also, these cats are designed for high gas flow, and therefore porous and tough - so it should create a large surface area for HHO generation and handle high temps.

Hopefully someone can try this....

Thoughts?

Are you aware of the energy needed to extract the platinum from a converter, if not it takes lots of heat, and you have to have your temperatures monitored. It would take lots of converters to get just a little platinum.

You have an ideal that could work. BUT let me ask you this. Why must you choose Platinum over SS that does not rust or hardly break down? What gains does platinum really have over SS?

I once found a Platinum coated Walking stick on eBay for 12 bucks, i never purchased it.

Hi

My approach is not to extract the platinum from the cat converter, rather use the platinum honeycomb array and make it into one electrode in a bucket of water ( use a SS plate as the second electrode ) to see how it goes.

It may be that the honeycomb structure isnt great at conducting electricity, but logically it would have to have some sort of electrical conduction capabiltiy since there is platinum and thorium woven through it......

I realise the cat converter has 2 parts - one for stripping oxygen off whatever goes through and once that recombines stuff. If I can use just the stripping part, I should be able to rip oxygen from the water going through and liberate the hydrogen.......

We'll see how we go.

Based on what I learned when you run an engine you get carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a combustible, Flammable gas that can be reused to run a bigger engine than the engine producing it, Patent US4059076 and US4787359. I have learned that when you first start your engine your converter doesn't work because its cold. Eventually it gets so hot that it actually BURNS the carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. I am not sure what is meant by a speed up oxidation of the converter or how the platinum plays a role in the converter process. Perhaps the Platinum in the converter will glow red since it is so thin and this is why platinum is used, because it will not fall apart when it is close to a cherry or rust pit away?

The catalytic converter Burns the gas that did not get burnt but it still doesn't burn 100% of the gas into dioxide.

On u-tube I have seen videos of 6-packs of mason jars that some people have put together  to make HHO.One could use the plastic head of a flyswatter to separate any electrodes in solution. It takes about 20 converters to get an oz of platinum. If you want cheap I would use wire coathangers for electrodes.Yeah, they might not last too long but you can always get more.Triffid
