The "explosion" seems to have killed his driver, since he can't seem to draw a little arc to the welding rod again.

I don't see anything unusual in this video, the same thing has happened many times in my lab, magnets not needed, just the right (or wrong) combination of capacitance, inductance, and a path to ground. Most recently just a couple of days ago, blowing a 15 kV power supply (which is now repaired). Maybe some little "explosive" chemical reaction with the rod flux coating or the paint on the magnet is happening, but it could also just be dust and dirt blowing off from the arc.

Maybe someone can translate the narration into English; if there's something unusual pointed out that I'm missing, I'd like to know about it.

Verpies, your picture would be more interesting if it showed other conditions as well, like reversed magnet polarity or how the arc curves when there are no magnets at all present.

No, the ceramic magnet is too weak to curve fast electrons down to the diameter of a welding rod.

Take a look below, how large the curvature radii are, when ions and electrons are curved by strong NdFeB magnets, in a spark gap.

(The Testatika people also talked about 'organize charges'..). Is there any difference in output when using a magnetically quenched spark gap? Or does the amperage rise?

@Gauschor: The difference between a magnetically quenched gap and a plain non-quenched gap is about the same as when quenching with compressed air or rapid rotation. It allows you to pass more current through the gap and still get good cut-off, instead of power arcing through conductive plasma that persists in the gap after the firing proper. This allows faster rise and fall times of the current flowing downstream of the gap, like into your primary tank circuit, which in turn results in higher voltages induced in a resonant secondary.
