Instead to use diode, I will use SKET 400 thyristor, but I still need to drop the current.

As we are looking for anomalies, all possible DC biasing arrangements should be tried whilst monitoring lamp illumination and noise levels against input power level. I would go with your 400A device. You will have time to disconnect it if its running too hot which I doubt it will. I think you should also try this diode on the second transformer with an additional winding.
