Yep, tried this also, but spark/shockwave seems to be most energy-efficent way to do the trick. Even only from 12V and with 10 turns of 0.2mm wire (with ca 3cm diameter split-ring toroid) I get descent "inner" magnet.

Consider opening a beer bottle You'd never open it by hand with just pulling the cork (unless you're Chuck Norris). But when ju put knife edge under the cork side and apply sudden impulse cork flies away with no effort + you look cool.

If these things were seen in mechanical analogies a lot can be made much clearer. For instance a high inductive coil is equiavalent to a massive body. It's speed is the current and the magnetic field is its momentum. We all know bodies of mass resist motion, the bigger they are the more force is needed to affect them. We can speed up a body over a long time period by acting on it with a small force or... we can instantly get it at a desired speed by banging a small mass with a high speed on it. In inelastic collisions all momentum is transfered in an incredible short time period, this is fascinating by itself.

But in electricity there's one culprit. When you bang a coil so to speak it wants to immediately sky rocket its current but there's one culprit, friction aka resistance. Consider this as air drag, to top it all off this friction is proportional to speed (current). The moment the body gains speed it kicks in with all its might trying to stop it. So I assume when you do bang a coil make the resistance has to be really low, to make sure all the momentum is transfered instead of lost as heat. When the former happens then you will have all kind of magic like exciting the environment and so on.

I'd strongly suggest fuses and or breakers if you are going to try looping it.  Also a double pole double throw switch or relay would be nice to take it off the mains once it is running and looped.  If you got light then you have just hit the jackpot!   And it would seem to be an easy way to show whether this is OU or not.

once you switch away from the mains the power will be gone.
So i guess that is the source.
