Evening Grum,

The main reason for me replicating this setup was to try and identify the reason for the 'noise'. I'm now happy from the information supplied by the builder that this is caused by an overload condition. This now confirms in my mind that TK's 'noise' was also caused by an overload and as I commented in my earlier post, I now think that he was using a step-up transformer that was being overloaded by excessive input. My next experiment will be to explore this idea but at the moment I'm not sure how he chopped up the current to the lamps.
