I use a free version of avast.com to protect my computer against viruses.So far its done a real good job of protecting me.triffid

I use Avast also and is good for me and free. I also use Comodo firewall, free..Ive used Zone Alarm pro, bout $30 a year registration, and I believe its a great fire wall and spyware in one.  Most all Pc's I have cleaned for people and introduced Zone Alarm to, havnt had problems since.

Nick, can you do a system restore? Bad malware can erase your restore files, and wont even let you open the task manager.

The best thing to do is search for how to get rid of what you got. Have you tried to reinstall Firefox?

  I have reinstalled FireFox, twice now. No luck, it just keeps reinstalling like a cancer, and it is now hideing in my pc without being detected. I have not tried the system restore, I will try that next, if it will allow me.

A simple but helpful feature of Comodo, the defense settings(set to 'paranoid' ) can be configured to stop and alert you to 'every' program that wants to start or perform functions. The alerts will be many for all sorts of things. But it can help you identify and locate the program(virus,malware) so you can try to delete the file manually( Eraser, also free, can get rid of some files that cant be deleted, like some malware, etc).

If and once you locate and get rid of that file, keep monitoring the comodo alerts, as it will show the seed file eventually, that keeps giving rebirth to the sickness. There could be multiple seed files and they all need to be dealt with.

Ive had many successful manual removals. The ones that I had no success even with multiple fixit programs, I remove the HD, get an external usb drive box, and use another pc to copy and save valuable files from the infected drive. Programs and windows are useless unless installed, so dont even open them. Just data, music, html, pics, vids, etc. and then format from the host computer.  A time consuming 'Eraser' wipe of the drive from the host pc can overwrite up to 32 times, where 7 times is gov standard, giving you high confidence that all problems are removed from the drive before formatting.
"Eraser" is free also. Once installed it resides in your 'right clik' menu for easy access to erase your heart out.

I have on occasion formatted a pc drive(in the original pc), and reloaded windows, and it still had attributes from the previous windows config. Formatting only, does not erase files or info previously written to the drive and the new windows install will look for and keep old stuff in the new install. 

Also, if anyone has problems  reinstalling windows, dont give up on the first window that says 'windows cannot be installed on this drive. Repeat up to 4-5 times and it should work. 2-3 is usually a good result. Dont know why but it happens sometimes.

One more thing. If you have kids that use your computer, most will naturally search for 'free music'.  These can be the most malicious sites, and the kids just dont know any better.  That would be rule no 1 for my kids, 'Do not.....this and that...)  ;]  Avast puts up a bar scale next to Yahoo, etc. searches showing if the site is safe or not before clicking on it. Green is good, yellow is caution and red is get the heck outa here.  ;]
