Yes, but I remember it as, "Beyond Tomorrow," with compressed-air tanks, (not steam,) with a new type of high-efficiency air-motor, (and possibly/hopefully regenerative braking.)

I remember the old beyond 2000 show, the steam engine was by Ted pritchard.
The clip showed him driving  his old  steam modified 60s ford falcon, from memory ford was interested in the 70s when oil prices skyrocketed, the clip showed an old small 40s or 50s  truck , in which you could see the engine, he described  the basic principle behind the engine. The design somehow used some of the steam or pressure from one cylinder into the next, ( not sure, search the web, may be info on the design).

There was no  interest as prices went down.
