you cant actually "remove" the eather, what you do is distort it, to the point that it no longer impedes your mass from traveling through it.

If you open that thing up, you see that the + and - form the primary coil.

the path from the (-) terminal to the plug-wire forms the secondary coil,
but it is all one continuous wire.
the two (-) ends are tied together inside of the thing.
