at mr brook you should try using the crazy glue like youve said and rty adding other things to it asell as ithout and ith different salts and crystal liquid mixtures  maybe you heat it maybe not maybe you add stuff to it and heat it up and maybe you can add it  as a strenghtener these rock lumps have orked and are not poer full but are alot easierto follo and seehats going on and you could ok fromthere never get rid of this thread e should keep it as a future reference for kids in the future maybe e ill make a better cell than john ith our combined effortshe only has three helpers e have potentially 6 billion people on the net so keep it up maybe e ill all be famous even if e dont make it in the poer cell race to zero point e ill be remembered as the revolutionarys the valiant ho defied john hutches regards id make a great public speaker just like hitler but not as bad  anyays keep up the ideas and i ill asell

@all - a riddle (or lack of knowledge on my part)?

I built a classical text book battery: copper - paper soaked in salt water - aluminium, same size and metals as for my "tile cement - cell" which I posted on page 56 of this thread (Reply #833 on: May 31, 2010, 11:22:17 PM).

copper - tile cement - aluminium (120 x 120 mm) --> about 1.02 to 1.16 Volt and 0.15 mA

copper - salt water paper - aluminium (120 x 120 mm) --> about 0.54 Volt and 1 mA

Why can the same metals (copper and aluminium) in one case create about 1 Volt (tile cement) and in the other case about 0.5 Volt (salt water)?

0.5 Volt corresponds nicely to the theoretical voltages of metals in saltwater:

aluminium (about 1 Volt) minus copper (about - 0.5 Volt) = 0.5 Volt.

There is a recipe on this thread for making your own rochelle salts.
It requires cream of tartar and sodium carbonate which are old fashioned kitchen supplies. They are not available everywhere, but easy to get on line.
I do not want to make a mistake with the recipe, so I will just say it is here.

I am so glad you mentioned the cell on the air battery thread. I had missed your follow-up posts.
I want to ask you what tile cement is?
Is it portland cement and sand and water? or is it something with a glue of some kind?

When I used portland cement, I dissolved the aluminum foil electrode, so I gave up on that line of thought.
So, I am glad you are using this ubiquitous material.

Here the contents of the tile cement I used (bad translation):

Portland cement  25%  -  35% (contains gypsum as additive)

Quartz sand  55%  -  60%

Dispersion powder
(Vinylacetat-Ethyhlen or Vinylacetat-Vinylversatat-Acrylat)   2%  -  5%
 
Cellulose ether
(Methylhydroxiethyl- or Methylhydroxipropylcellulose)        0,3%  -  0,5%         

Binding regulator (Calciumformiat)          0,5%   -  1%

The manufacturer (Henkel) does not want to be more specific (trade secrets).

For the readers in Europe I attach a picture of the tile cement package.


The "copper - tile cement - aluminium cell" holds up really well (almost 4 weeks now).

Best thing to keep it going is to place it outside for an hour when the air is damp in the morning. This should be done every three or four days.

It gives only about 0.15 mA but at 1.02 to 1.1 Volt.

Because of the tile cement the cell is very sturdy and so far the bond between the metal sheets and the tile cement is still excellent. I am planning a bigger version (more and bigger cells) to be placed in the open air, because the day and night air humidity and temperature differences should keep it going for a long time. The cell should be placed in the shade under a roof.


On the other hand, the "copper - salt water paper towel - aluminium cell" (same size, same metals) dries out over night and the only way to bring it back to its old life (0.54 Volt, 1 mA) is to take it apart, wet the paper towel thoroughly with salt water and put it back together.

I conclude, that one should simply submerge the metal plates (several pairs) in salt water instead of using the salt water soaked paper towel (because the water in the paper evaporates too quickly). But in this case it is much better to use other acids which work better than salt water.

Still, in an emergency one could build a battery from aluminium soda cans (scrapped blank and flattened) and steel plates (from abandoned cars, scrapped blank) in salt water to run a little radio, a clock or a few LEDs. Some sort of Mad Max doomsday battery. Start collecting soda cans and store them in your old car in the back yard ;).
