Title: Amazing Grace
Post by: z.monkey on March 20, 2011, 08:20:15 AM
A little off topic, but good to know...

Researching the phase "It is easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission" I came upon the Wiki page for "Amazing" Grace Hopper...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper

(From Wiki)
Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906 â€" January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist and United States Navy officer. A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, and developed the first compiler for a computer programming language.[1][2][3][4][5] She conceptualized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She is credited with popularizing the term "debugging" for fixing computer glitches (motivated by an actual moth removed from the computer). Because of the breadth of her accomplishments and her naval rank, she is sometimes referred to as "Amazing Grace". The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Hopper (DDG-70) was named for her.
(End Wiki)

Amazing Grace paved the way for all of us interwebz peeps, and computer nerds.
My day job is computer sciences.  I coded in COBOL back in the 80's.
We has come a long way...

thanks for posting z.

after going through a couple of electronics programs at a local tech college it was still tough to find a job
so i continued on to a programming degree, then physics.

the first software classes were cobol.

i really liked cobol but i think they should have had a typing class for a pre-requisite. :)

here are some links to the 60 minutes interview.

i'm glad someone else, besides me, remembered her.

she truly was a beautiful soul.

thanks again.

Wow, I didn't think any one now a days even remembered good old
cobble.  ;D  I started on the IBM 4140 with pascal, fortran4, cobol and
yuk basic. Told to stay away from the last as it was can of worms to
deal with. Was right. Now all want C, C++. Oh and CICS too.
Then they scrapped all the mainframes and went to WinBloz servers.

That was some days tho. Got a phone call from a head hunter just prior
to the 2k to debug cobol code at $60 per hour. Sad it was in NYC and
Chicago. Not long enough either to give up a full time job for.
