Elements # 1, # 2, # 3, are round iron bar. Element # 3 moves into the page when it moves into and out of element # 2

#1 stays in place while # 2 is pulled into the stator field.
Now #3 is placed so it is pulled into #2 USEFUL WORK IS DONE.
Now # 1 moves up to #2 that has #3 inside it and moves them both out of the magnetic field.
Now #3 is removed.
Now #1 and #2 are moved back to their original position to restart the sequence.
Note: The work required to move #1 and #2 into and out of the magnetic field are equal but one is positive, one is negative. The net gain in energy comes from the positive work done by #3.

Howcome pushing both 2 and 3 out costs the same amount of work as 2 entering?
