Post by: hartiberlin on July 07, 2006, 06:26:51 PM
Hi All,
this is interesting, what I just found on Ebay USA
about a special made alternator driven by e.g. a lawnmower motor engine:

Here is the end result of my attempt at one of those setups for my shop and hurricane relief  ;)
2hp gas engine
1 chevy alternator
1 marine bat
1 1000 watt inverter
roll around stand welded from bed rails (trash find) + wheels (junkbox)

charges batts and runs the lights and all the machine tools in my shop.
It could use a bigger enginer though... I needed at least a 3.5 - 5 hp I think but this works ok, just takes longer to charge.
Total costs after buying engine (yard edger at pawn shop), inverter (harbor freight on sale) ,batt (on sale), alt (was given free)  approx $160
