Title: Is this "motor" a joke?
Post by: gauschor on June 10, 2012, 07:17:48 AM
Don't know if the experimentor is serious about this, or if it's just a motor hidden under the table. Otherwise it makes no sense... I mean it needs quite some power to rotate the mass of 2 little magnets at least.

Hi,

I tried it ,

There is defenitly a force strong enough to turn the magnets.

But... So far is seems like a compass magnifier. It will turn in one position, approx North.

Funny is that no matter how I arrange the (different) batteries, the direction stays the same. But then when I turn the table, it will not move.

I could not get it to spinn, but there is a force.

Interesting.

Parameters I used:

- Two small neo's as in footage.
- Un-insulated iron wire rolled up
- 8 AA

Some people steal women's underwear from clotheslines, other people make fake magnet motor clips.  It's just a statistical reality.

Ii suppose it changes direction when you put the batteries on their heads! Haha. Maybe it's a radionic motor! Come on guys...

Well I was not sure, it could have been something like a homopolar generator (which do work). There weren't any visible contacts though, which made it irritating; except the 8 batteries can create some "potential" within the circle causing electric energy to flow within the circular wire and thereby causing Lorentz force, which as a consequence, could rotate the device.

Are you serious? It's not only a joke. It's a very bad joke. A classical "table experiment" with a hidden energy source. Of course it is a rotating magnet under the table.

The batteries are not even connected to anything. Magnets cannot provide energy, and the coil isn't connected to any energy source.

If you noticed the toys in the background, this cannot be a very serious physicist ;-))

Dam, I guess I had a bad day... at least this video made me refresh my knowledge about homopolar generators, lorentz law, right hand rule etc. which I forgot since my last experiment.

It looks real to me gauschor (http://www.overunity.com/profile/gauschor.21805/).

Thanks for posting it.

Definitely there's something underneath spinning the magnets on top, look at the magnets closely,as they spin you will notice the magnets stays in one place, in the middle, if it is really spinning by its own, the magnets would move around freely...it's really a joke!  ;D

I think this is much more convincing. ;D

Interesting, that there is some truth to it. The batteries seem to provide some kind of magnetic field and thereby the whole arrangement could act as a compass magnifier (which is what cherryman said). I have no explanation why it should rotate continuously (this might be fake), instead of only rotating to the strongest magnetic pole and then stop.

This guy with the video from the post above has also this kind of experiment here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBZTXdf7c-o (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBZTXdf7c-o) and on a very smooth ground so it can spin easily (like a compass needle).

Hey Gausher,

Don't let the pencil-pushers discourage you,

OU is also fun, and those little experiments are easy and cheap replicated. Therefore WORTH to try.
As I not claim to know it all, sometimes trying is better then calling every one else stupid.

There is a reason most of the groundbreaking inventions in history comes  from amateurs out of sheds, because the pencil-pushing walking encyclopedia's have huge trouble that someone without there "knowledge" can invent something they didn't think of, or have learned is impossible.

Tnx for the vid!
