This is a project I'm working on as a 3 wheel bicycle (Trike).
My goal is to create this E-Trike with a range of 60 miles per charge at 20mph with a top speed of 35.
I am starting a $5,000 funding on kick Starter to build the first prototype.

I was thinking of aluminum frame.
I will have to make a prototype frame from plywood and double check all parts before going all aluminum.
Plywood will allow me to make a basic template and also I will be able to correct design before a finish design frame.

It looks nicely stiff in the Z axis, but I don't see what provides stiffness in the X axis. Are you relying on the thickness of the material for that? You might want to consider using square or round tubing along the top and bottom of your horizontal members so that they do not require excess material for the desired stiffness.

Is that a solar panel on the front of your design? If so, this is something I have thought about for a long time. If you drive this to work on a sunny day...why not have it trickle charge while sitting in the sun in the parking lot all day? I have not seen anyone do this before and I always wonder why. The panel would not allow you to just drive on the sun but....as I said...it is just sitting there in the sun while you are at work...so why not get a few watts from the sun during this time?
If this is not your intention, you might want to consider this.

A lamination stack on either side of a pair of square tubes would be one way to stiffen up the X axis.

Ive been thinking about the same kinda thing. Been riding ebikes for 7 years now. Have 3 of them. One that I bought in the beginning has near 15k miles on it. Does 25mph, lots of low end torque, 48v. Running sla 14ah Dura12-14F2 Duracell. Found at Batteries plus Light Bulbs stores, that are the same foot print as 12ah. Heavier than lith, but $150 every couple years if I take care of them properly. Had issues with lith bats back then. And even now, $600 for what I need, I cant say I have many years of faith in them yet. Still hear of people that are not happy with costs of replacing lith batts before their advertized life.
My idea was to make the frame out of pvc tubing and wrap with carbon fiber once the frame is complete. There are pvc tubes with thin walls to reduce weight, but makes a great core for framework. Pvc likes resin also. And the cost of the carbon fiber is not bad really. Had gotten 3 yrds of 4x4 weave, nicer look than 1x1, for about $60. 50in wide. Possibly a couple hundred to complete a frame covering, depending on the framework. 1x1 is cheaper also. Surfboard resin is glass clear and uv resistant.
Wanted to do a bottom body with flip up canopy also. Needs to be small as wind can blow ya over. ;)
Im working with an Arduino Mega and the tft color touch screen as a controller and info center. All it has to do is intercept the throttle signal and modify it any way you want. Have presets for gradual throttle up or full power, how ever the user want to map the presets. My bike will spin out at quick full on from a dead stop. So a preset for rain would be useful to reduce spin.
One of my other bikes is a Tidalforce M-750 that I am replacing the stock controller with an Ardiuno/tft. The M-750x can do 30mph, where mine is set for 20mph. All due to programming, but no body seems to be able to hack them, yet. So I will be able to open up the capabilities to what ever I wish on that bike. Has a very strong motor. Will pull the front wheel off the ground, even being a lower power(programmed) model. Legality in most all 50 states is 20mph max and under 750w/1hp.. The M-750 is 749w and stops accelerating at 20mph. Street legal. Meaning it is considered a bicycle.
Funny. My Trek is 500w and does about 25mph. Can pedal with to about 27 in final gear. Not a racing bike. $450 next to the bottom Trek. Has been very good to me.
there are kits that will do 55mph for 50 mi. Will need a much better bike though. Id say above $1000 to handle those speeds and pressures. My Trek has a pot control to adjust the throttle sig out and a switch to go from low preset to full power. Made it myself with radshack parts and project box.
Will post some pics of the bikes when I find where they are.
Good luck. Will be watching with interest what you come up with. My Trek, the 48v front wheel drive kit was bought on ebay 7 yrs ago and still runs great. Was about $600 on ebay. 500w 48v 15a fuse, about right. Now you can get 1kw kit for $200 n change, w/o bat on ebay.
If you are going for manufacturing, check out Alibaba for your motors. Thats where all these ebay kits are coming from, and reduce your costs significantly. ;)

This is a better look at the main frame design, I can also make this out of aluminum later on.
I can print this frame out on paper and use a pantograph to trace onto the plywood for each part to build this frame like you see it.

Why did you lower the goal to 2500? From what I see, you will probably only be able to build the 1 bike with that?
What are your plans after that?
You could go for a lot more, while offering a whole trike to a pledge for giving an amount that covers it plus some for the time and effort.

I agree. The QEG folks got like $300,000 and counting for something that does not, and can not work. This is a real bike and I know you (Tommy) will make it work. I like Mag's idea that for X donation, you get a complete bike. Lots of folks will give $5, $10, etc and that will help too. Go after this and get what you need to do this right.
We know this is not a scam and it is a real technology so...best of luck to you Tommy.

Sounds about right for a specialized bike. There are ebikes going for 10,000 and up out there. 55mph for 50mi. You should be able to get more than 25mi with that pack. The 1kw motor may be an issue. 750w and under is street legal in all 50 states. 1kw can get you 30mph or better, but 20mph is street legal in all 50 states also. My trek has a 500w 48v and it can do 25mph with 26in 2.0 tires. And a 500w motor kit is cheaper. ;)
My bike is about 80lb with 14ah sla(4 of them) and Im 225lb. And it will peel out from a stop with full throttle. Love that bike. I get over 20mi, with stops and goes along the way, where most kits are mile rated for no stops, just full throttle on a flat road. So with the 12ah, I would get less than 20mi with stops and goes as it was rated for 20mi, no stops. Its the acceleration from a stop that uses the most power. Best eff is at top speed.
But many people are riding around at 35mph and nobody(yet) has issues with cops. Many police dont even know the law when it comes to ebikes. Sometimes they may say, "hey, you cant ride that on the sidewalk". But if it is within the limits of the law as I have posted, and it has pedals, it is a 'bicycle" period. Just be nice with them and explain and it shouldnt be an issue once they understand.
But if they start cracking down, since there are more and more of them riding around, the power and speed will be a concern. You can use a resistor network on the throttle output to the controller to lower the top speed in your case. And have a turbo button to climb hills and such. ;)
The reason I was saying to ask for more is, you will need more funds to build more bikes. And the more funds you have to start with, the more parts you can buy in bulk and build the bikes cheaper. More profits, or happier customers, which ever you decide upon.
So, you can do another pledge drive after you finish this one and its a proven product. No biggy. But it would be nice to just go for it, ya know? ;D

Hey tommy
Watched the vid. Looks good. ;) About the soaking of the wood. Just use thinner ply and bend it, then glass it. if you soak the wood to bend it, most all the water needs to be gone from the board before you glass it. If the wood gets warm or hot(resin curing, sun, etc), the water will expand and possibly delaminate the resin/glass from the wood, cause bubbles, etc.
Some other tidbits about the motor wheels...
if you ever take one apart, make a jig to separate the armature from the drum. The armature is the winding holder, stationary to the axle, and the outer diameter of the drum has the mags. My motor, 54 mags, little curve to them, about 1inx1/2inx 1/8in. But all of them together have some serious pull on that armature. So a jig that separates them is a big plus. The biggest issue is the mags breaking if something goes wrong during manual separation. Lots of shims, one after another to lift all sides a bit unevenly, pain in the butt. And pain in the finger that happens to get caught in that bear trap. Pulled mine apart to replace a bad hall sensor. There are 3 of them for timing. They are embedded in holes in the outer diameter of the winding cores to detect magnet positions for timing. I moved mine over about 1/16in to gain more bottom end. My plan with the arduino controller will be to add delay to those pulses from the halls to change the ratio of top speed or more torque. This will give the motors the best of both worlds. My first kit was a brushed Wilderness motor. The brush holder had slotted mounting screw holes for the same kind of adjustment. But that would take a mechanical deal to be able to adjust those while riding. So I figured with the delays on the halls, its a piece of cake to adjust on the fly.
The wheels that the motors come with are generally pretty much stronger than normal bike wheels. Spokes are fatter also. So dont get concerned about lots of weight on that rim. Chinese, but beef. Just check for loose spoke nuts once in a while. You wont know one came completely loos till it falls in the rim and jingles around. The rims are real stiff. So if a spoke becomes loose, the wheel wont wobble or seem bent to the side like a normal bike rim. So best to check them here n there. broke a lot of spokes on the trek rim. Hitting bumps and holes in the street at 25mph at a total of 300lb, snap, snap. Sidewalks are even worse at times.
Dont know what tire your using on the motor wheel. I recommend 2.0 tires. Adds a little more cushion to the ride. And looks better. Beefier. Razorbacks are very resistant to puncture and flats. Like 50 bucks but worth it if you dont want to fix flats pretty much ever. I go with bontrager street 26 2.0. Last a long time and rare to get a flat. I learned my lesson. Was doing 30mi a day to work for 3 years. 1 day I had 5 flats. FIVE!! UGH! Just fixed one and 1 mile ahead, PSSSSSSssssss. lol About 38 bucks each. Worth every penny. Also, for the tool kit, they have co2 cartridges to fill the tube. Fast and on your way. The little pumps. Over 200 pumps and not up to 65lb. I dont mind a workout, but gees. Large cartridge will fill close to full. Got 3 in my kit. Havnt used one in a year. ;)
You can make a kickstand thing to raise the rear and also on the front for repairs and even maintenance. Just ideas for ya.

But, I find nothing saying anything about this. The 50cc motorized bike I built complied with all of the laws here pertaining to motorized bikes. Well...almost all. Speed was supposed to be limited to 25 mph but I could hit 36 on a flat road. The law said I needed a step through frame (think scooter) so I built it using a girl's bike.
Has anyone done an electric bike using a trailer for the batteries? I mean, a small bike trailer could hold several car sized batts and/or even the motor. I have seen tube videos of guys using trailers for gas engine bikes with larger engines than the law allows for but, the law seems confused on the trailer bit. Four 12 volts car batteries on a bike trailer with a nice solar panel on the top could power your e-bike for a long, long time. Otherwise, build a battery pack out of 18650 li ion cells. (Like 50 of them) I could make an e-bike go over 100 miles/charge easily I believe. You could even use 2 motorized hubs on the trailer and leave the bike stock. Batts and motor in the trailer.

Its a federal law. Some states or cities may have their own laws also, Like I heard that S.C. allowed 30mph. But that was hear say. In cali, you can have higher speeds up to 35 with registration. Tag I suppose.
The gas motors work pretty good. Cheaper than electric for a kit usually. For me the drawbacks are noise, cant bring it in the apt due to fumes. And can make you smell like you have been using a leaf blower all day. lol. The hub motors are very quiet. Some have internal gears that are noisy. Some are chain drive and noisy also. But the motor like Tommy has, like mine, there is a hum, but pretty quiet. Wont wake the neighbors. Or a baby. lol And the low end torque is incredible. Ya have to ride one to gain full appreciation, There is a stigma to electrics for some reason. A lot of people tend to think of the little electric cars kid ride. Like 3 to 7 mph. But once they take my bike for a spin, they seem to take a long time to come back.lol But then they are amazed and say, I would have never known till I road it. I have 3 bikes. Total miles of about 25k. Lost count. Trek has about 15k. Little walmart triax with wilderness kit about 6k mi. And the tidalforce m750 about 5kmi. I still sold.
Electric is awesome. My fiero will us a dc motor, 9in dia, 15in long. Will beat a normal fiero all over the place. Whats really cool about electrics also is that you can exceed the typical constant power input over 10 times in spurts. So the motor I want is a Net Gain Warp9. like 18 hp at 72v rated. But you can give it up to 300v. Figure how long do we really need to be accelerating, then we only need about 16hp to keep the vehicle at 65mph. Some vids on YT show guys with evs using this motor and its just plain sick. 72v wont get ya very fast. 40, 45 maybe. So I want to run 144v. Just transportation. Will do 70mph or so.
Would love to build hub motors for the fiero. Gota do a lot of thinking on that one.

Oh yeah, the trailers. Yeah that can be done. Look up bicycle trailers. They have them for kids, and other uses. Pretty simple and neat hookup to the bike. Heck, I could put enough sla batts on that to go 100mi. LIPO probably 200 or more mi.

Well one thing I think I know about dc motors is that the torque curve is flat. In others words, if I am saying this right, unlike a gas engine, a dc motor has all of its torque at 10 rpm as well as 3,000 rpm. I drive an electric golf cart every day at my job. it is very anemic and only does about 16 mph. It will not even spin the tires on solid ice, as we have had here all week! But, the motor controller is programmed with an acceleration curve. (I spoke to the repair guy) He said he can hook up his laptop and increase the top speed to 27 mph. It uses 5 large 12 volt cells. (each larger than the big battery in my van) and the charge only lasts one full 8 hour day of patrol. I am not impressed with it at all.
But, I could get into an e bike for sure. Around here, as long as you looked like you were pedaling and there was no exhaust noise and smoke coming from the bike you could probably pass a cop doing 50 mph and they would leave you alone. I looked at those hub motors before building my other bike and a single hub motor would have cost me more than I paid for my bike (new) the engine, and the drive system. Then I would have to buy the batteries and controller.
Like anything else, the price is coming down so, I will take another look at these.

Very nice. Nice bikes there. I noticed the hub was on the front wheel....does that make it hard to drive?

The front wheel drive does take getting used to. But it has advantages also.
Being there is no noise of a running motor, it is always possible to hit the throttle by accident when walking the bike. With rear wheel drive, it can knock you over or jam a spiky pedal into the back of your leg, etc. The front drive will slip, but the rear digs in when walking the bikes. Yeah yeah, just shut off the switch. lol. But it will happen.
The other thing, when riding, front drive helps navigate tight turns and zigzags. Where a rear drive can push you over if you turn too hard. Its something you have to experience. The tidalforce bike is rear dr, so I do have experience between the 2.

The Triax was my first ebike. $169 at walmart, $300 for 36v wilderness kit. The trek bike was $350 new on sale from $450 due to new models coming out, and the kit was $600, batteries and all 7 years ago. Bags and lights extra. I recommend building your own always. For the same price, a prebuilt is usually lower quality.

Thats not bad at all 92lb. ;D My bike is about 70lb with batts, and its made of alum mostly. I see in the vid your going with sla batts? Did you change your mind on the big box of lipo batteries? Maybe I missed something. If you do make lipo packs, make individual packs of the total voltage you want to use and parallel them. If you put them all in 1 pack the heat doesnt have an easy way out. Then put the packs spread out to distribute weight. There was an electric car made by college students and they used LOTS of AA NIMH batteries distributed throughout the car. Good idea. Individual packs are easier to take apart to repl bad cells. Some do fail. ;)

A good bicyclist can put out something above 100w.
My Tidalforce bike used circuitry for regen that sent charge to only portions of the 30 d cell series pack. This way ebraking has more effect. Or in your case, make a relay circuit that switches through the batteries sequentially.
For example. Any dc or pwm driven motor/generator, just like a pulse motor, if it is free wheeling at top speed, then if you were able to physically turn the motor faster by another means while the motor is at top speed, you will get to a point that the motor no longer consumes from the source, and turn the motor faster and it can send charge back to the source. Like Lasersabers 3d printed motor. Great example. So my tidalforce is pulling x amount of current at 36v at 20mph. But if they had set it up to send power from the hub back to the whole bat pack at the same time, the motor would not have above 36v coming out unless the motor were spinning at a rate of 25 to 30mph possibly more. So since the output voltage from the motor is less than the input at the same rpm then it cannot charge the source as a whole. So send it to individual batteries in sequence instead of trying to generate the full pack voltage. Like if you put a smaller motor lower power motor on the output demo in the vid, the motor would be in overdrive instead of just moderate running.. So charging the batts individually, they will get more charge from the work. ;)
Also think about a geared settup and/or with a flywheel on the pedal charge.

Yes I agree.
I have a different design using regen breaking.
As the regenerated breaking occur, this energy is stored in a super capacitor bank. The micro controller will do slow charge on the battery bank 1 while the other is being used. So you have two battery bank to run the trike, but only one is being used while the other is fully charge or being charged.
I design a system last summer that will scan each 12v battery up to 10 cells that will charge in a cycle, so 48 v is only 4 cells when using 12v batteries.

I have a 1000w DC motor that would work better but added chain and gearing would increase weight.

What voltage system are you running on that motor/controller? 36v? or 48v?
Some of these controllers are multi voltage. Not sure how they determine shutdown when batts are low when going from one voltage level to another. But I would think that a 1000w, even with the weight you are claiming, should climb hills quite good. My 500w, shown below, can maintain 15mph on its own up a fairly steep grade. 25mph max. Bike is about 75lb and Im 220. So im just wondering if the trike is actually putting 1000w into the motor, or can it be that it needs more voltage input to do so. Some are 72v and more.
The pic below I just took last night. Replaced a bad hall sensor. Also repl another so all are the same. Had 1 go bad before. Replaced it. This time the one I already replaced is still good, so the originals just aint worth a crap. Dont know why they would go bad. Too much flux? Maybe bad supply voltage to the halls. Too much. But seems ok. Could be a once in a while blip.

Lead acid will really push this trike over 30mph, I don't know how many amps I'm pulling yet.
Still have to add the meters and speedometer to get a better reading.

I use a WattsUp meter inline. Gives voltage, amps whats real time and AH and WH . 100Apeak 60v max, I think. Never had it that high, but you can look up specs if you like. Use anderson connectors. Great connectors.

Parallel recharging is the best, as is parallel discharging provided that you have independent charge management for each battery. The downside is that it is expensive.

This is a special mechanical switch I'm working on for recharging and regenerate braking.
Two version I designed.
This will work off the brake cable, being mechanical will keep it cheap and simple.
I do have a electronics version with H-Bridge design, but it would need delay timing for each battery. So a simple micro controller would be needed to switch each battery in a simple order.
My other thought is to add a 12v ac inverter to convert 120v ac bring it down to 48v dc.
This just might be something that would be easy on the battery bank and keep all of then in series.
Two golf cart battery would work great for this project then.

Did a test run with the hybrid system running and got 15 miles at 20mph on 10oz of gasoline.
The small 2-stroke engine is a 25cc and about 1hp with a 48v10a@3000 rpm to drive the E-Bike.
Comes out to be about 192mpg.

If I was using a 4-stroke engine then that would be a great idea, but this is a 2-stroke that need mixed oil/gas.
If I use a vapor carb on this engine, it would last just a few minutes before it burns up the rings and lock up to be thrown away.

Hi tommy, awesome job on your tadpole trike.
My suggestion for another thing to add, fully enclosed fairing, taking into consideration the engine noise and exhaust with fairing.
This way you could attach solar panels to it and be protected from rain and cold.
