IMHO - most of the time, when readings are a little to a lot 'iffy', that's just the meter's way of saying 'WTF are you trying to get me to measure ?'
That is to say, the measuring stick is usually fine, it's the person holding on to it that is either using it and/or reading it wrong. ::)
