There is a CO2(-aequivalent) production/emission comparison between

ic-engine car                    and    electric car
30 units/100 Km                        7,5 units/100 Km electricity mix (all sources)
1,25 units/100 Km only renewable electricity sources

Air-to-synthetic waterfuel + 90% efficieny ic engine + exhaust emission filter

1,25 units/100 Km          and 1,25 units/100 Km = pari

Only air-to synthetic waterfuel and exhaust emission filter ( older,existent,ic-engine cars improvement)

3 units/100 Km              and   7,5-1,25 units/100 Km

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regenerative_brake (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regenerative_brake)

A diagram by the United States Department of Energy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Energy) (DoE) shows cars with internal combustion engines as having efficiency of typically 13% in urban driving, 20% in highway conditions. Braking in proportion to the useful mechanic energy amounts to 6/13 i.e. 46% in towns, and 2/20 i.e. 10% on motorways.

The DoE states that electric cars convert over 77% of the electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels.[57] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regenerative_brake#cite_note-57) The efficiency of an electric vehicle, taking into account losses due to the electric network, heating, and air conditioning is about 50% according to Jean-Marc Jancovici (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marc_Jancovici)[58] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regenerative_brake#cite_note-58) (however for the overall conversion see Embodied energy#Embodied energy in the energy field (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embodied_energy#Embodied_energy_in_the_energy_field)).

15% ( 13-20) average ic-engine car efficiency/77% power-to-wheel electric car efficiency

You have to remember that the REAL problem is the powers-that-be! One way or another they are going to make sure that they get paid! If any tech replaces petroleum, you can bet that ALL personal transportation will be required to have real-time GPS tracking installed so that THEY can continue to make us pay for every mile that we drive. In America such tracking tech will be a devastating blow to freedom!

We have to differ between drive efficieny improvement, included ecologocal sustainable development, and political ,estate tax/subsidiary budget, interests !
If not by fuel tax there is the km-drive tax opportunity, energy source independent, km on land or air-cars !
Each wireless(smart-)phone user in his car/workstation/home is tracked ! With/-out GPS-chip !

That's the same argument that I hear over and over. Once again, there is no LAW that says you HAVE TO HAVE a cell phone! But there WILL BE A LAW that says ALL personal transportation will have real-time GPS tracking! In countries that have not known true freedom, that's no big deal. But in America it IS a big deal! Why do you think that people released from jail on bond are required to wear a GPS tracker?

Think easy : GPS and RF(ID)Personal IDENTITY CARD,PASS-PORT,DIGITAL MONEY
Nano ( ink circuits and inkable batteries) technology makes  many dreams/mares possible !
Later,instead wear(ing),implant ! Each one ! Like today the pets !
(Partial) absurd but funny experiment result possibilities : Georges Lakhovsky lecture

But this is not near = actual, " true freedom", future !
