Could someone open source the building of wheel hub motors for a car? Apparently, Yes.
It seems a tall order. Access to a 3D printer is needed. A lot of neos and coil winding. They are a bit apprehensive about people designing up the power. Is it a practical project?

IMO
A dream come true !!
The kind of direction this world could/would take when FE
Becomes the norm
Retrofitting industry etc etc
Thanks for sharing

I am going to touch base with some members who have more
Experience with 3D printing to get feedback here!

That would be very useful. He has the program data files for 3D printers. The strength of different plastic filaments needs considering. Also, the milling of the aluminium plate is going to need planning. In due course, we could organise someone to set up to make half a dozen to start with.
Re Github, I don't really understand their software. will try further. For instance, the neos are defined as 30x10 and we need a 3rd dimension. But who do youi ask, and how? I suspect they will be 30x10x10 but they might be 30x30x10. After all, it is a serious piece of kit.

Still asking the open source builders with printers for input
Scalability is an issue for some .. ( making it smaller
Quite certain this is relatively simple ..but?
IMO this tech or approach is a big problem solver
In addition to battery power...
I am interested to put ancillary power plant ( small range assist etc)
And hopefully that power plant will run on very planet friendly ( and pocket friendly)
Non carbon Substance !
So car / transport can be battery powered for mots etc
but tiny power assist can come along for the ride ( when needed
Like luggage..
There will be plenty of room in previous engine bay
With a little imagination it Solves lots of issues !

Interesting stuff, Chet. Scalability.
For my part, I have registered with that Gitghub website but cannot understand how it works. It purports to be a collaborative site but doesn't seem to have opportunities for contacting people and discussing. It might be merely an archive for 3D printer files etc. I'll keep trying to find a webmaster.
Well
Jimboot is usually very good sorting through these
Type of issues ( like "what's going on here with open source group ?)
he is also one of the members I am going to ask opinions about this 3d printed project!
And for clarity..the auxiliary power units I mentioned are engines running on non carbon
Fuels ( one such investigation is Tom Reeds topic here)
To top off battery bank or extend range of electric vehicle !

git hub is mainly an open source repository for code and maintains version control. Sounds interesting will check it out later today.

That's very useful, JB. Is there a way to find out if the participants have discussion groups or if they can be linked to us? I have sent off an email pointing them to us but if you could try as well, that would be good.
I want one for my boat . Ill see what I can find

If they have a program or ? For smaller motors?
We could get many more open source persons involved if
We had a smaller one to learn on ?(me too)
Members with printers could send pieces to those builders who don't
Etc etc
Yes water craft that do not burn fossil fuels (or burn our atmosphere )
Or pollute our waterways!!
Small local transport that can run independently of
Fossil fuels
Monstrous need for such
And Reducing our carbon footprint!!
The future!!
Thanks for all you do

Ps
Been touching base with other open source
Researchers with 3D printers
As you know most keep busy with the hunt for
FE ..and I hate to distract that focus
But
This open source project is a natural fit !

You could ask how feasible it would be to make the disc in four quarters (to fit within the 3D printer's limit) and then bolt them together in some way. If I can sort out converting file types, I'm hoping to get an image of the rotor later on.

It's early days here ( this topic)
open source builders will certainly comment these coming weeks
as they become aware !
Perhaps consider to manage/moderate topic ?( updates and such for benchmarks posts ( 1st
Post in this topic etc ))
It truly helps focus topic
And once moderated..other sections can become branches of original!
Such moderated venues encourage other builders to join in !
And they too could start a moderated builders board of their own if they wish( some unique build or ?!

The 3d files could be scaled to suit smaller motors as long as you had the appropriate magnets. Looks like the milling of the hub would be the largest barrier of entry for me. I'd have to outsource that.
It is worth mentioning that there are 28 coils being charged and discharged and it would be good to collect the BEMF CEMF (???) spikes and return them.
Here is a potentially interesting link:

Paul is there more info on this build ?( or others similar?
Thanks

PS
Open source works ... we need the power system to compliment it !!
