A company called Niron has rediscovered (originally discovered in 1951) a magnet chemistry called Fe16N2 (ferrous & nitrogen) a form of magnet that competes with rare earth magnets but contains no rare earth elements.
Therefore the cost is going to be low and it has many advantages due to its very high coercivity, meaning you can make smaller motors or generators with the same power output. it calls the magnets "Clean Earth" Magnets presumably due to the abundance of the main elements.
