Title: Question about magnetic gate
Post by: OICU812 on August 23, 2007, 08:10:32 AM

All,

Hi, I am new on the board and I have a question about magnetic gates.

The plan is to setup two rows of magnets like the s.m.o.t.  The difference being all magnets are set to repel.  Both rows will be an equal distance apart.  A car mounted to a track will be placed on one end.  The car has a magnet set to repel the two the to rows.

At one end of the two rows a pivot will be mounted to both rows of repeing magnets.  The objective is to squezze the the two rows of magnets together to send the car flying out the other end.

The question is ------- What would be the best conguration for the magnets?  Flat like the s.m.o.t. or like the Minito wheel?

This is a drawing I made in Windows paint.

What is your goal? From what your describing all your doing is transforming the energy from the "squeeze" - to - "the car" to make it move forward. There is no gain of energy.

Tim,

The goal is to make a toy that shoots a car accross the room.  Trying to use the best magnet configuration possible.

I think the design you have then would be the best for that purpose. You would still have to experiment with all the different variables to find the best configuration depending on the size of magnets you have and the side of the car.
