Hi everyone. I am in the process of constructing a Newman machine and need some advice on the commutator material. I have reviewed JLNlabs web site and am making a unit similar in design to that. The problem I have is with the commutator material... I was planning on fixing copper plates on both sides of the commutator and using brushes for the contact points. I've been told by Stefan that graphite on copper contact makes the backspikes the best... Where do I get something graphite to make the connection to the copper plates that I affixed to the commutator wheel? It would appear that Jean from JLN labs used copper on copper in this replitcation back in 1998.
Before I begin my total construction, I was hoping to get some pointers or advice from others in the know. I will post my results here and on uTube when completed.
I have the benefit of having much more powerful magnets than JLNlabs did as well as over 4 miles of 34 copper wire.

You can buy carbon brushes for small motors in the market. For high current there are brushes used in old car dynamos which is brush with carbon copper mixture ideal for high current application with commutators to make contact. You may be able to get an old car dynamo(Not the present Alternator) to collect your brushes, Best wishes K.Gnanalingam gunda12@yahoo.com :o
Thanks! I had seen the carbon brushes all over the place. I was looking for it to specifically to say "graphite" but never had any luck. So, Carbon brushes are the same as graphite?

You do not need a sophisticated commutator to just get
your Newman motor turning (just for the motivation).' :)

"Real" commutators are more tricky but well documented on
the Internet, I guess, and are on my "Things to do" list. :)
