Chernobyl Fungus Feeds On Radiation
by Kate Melville

Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AEC) have found evidence that certain fungi possess another talent beyond their ability to decompose matter: the capacity to use radioactivity as an energy source for making food and spurring their growth.

Detailing the research in Public Library of Science ONE, AEC's Arturo Casadevall said his interest was piqued five years ago when he read about how a robot sent into the still-highly-radioactive Chernobyl reactor had returned with samples of black, melanin-rich fungi that were growing on the ruined reactor's walls. "I found that very interesting and began discussing with colleagues whether these fungi might be using the radiation emissions as an energy source," explained Casadevall.

Casadevall and his co-researchers then set about performing a variety of tests using several different fungi. Two types - one that was induced to make melanin (Crytococcus neoformans) and another that naturally contains it (Wangiella dermatitidis) - were exposed to levels of ionizing radiation approximately 500 times higher than background levels. Both of these melanin-containing species grew significantly faster than when exposed to standard background radiation.

"Just as the pigment chlorophyll converts sunlight into chemical energy that allows green plants to live and grow, our research suggests that melanin can use a different portion of the electromagnetic spectrum - ionizing radiation - to benefit the fungi containing it," said co-researcher Ekaterina Dadachova.

Investigating further, the researchers measured the electron spin resonance signal after melanin was exposed to ionizing radiation and found that radiation interacts with melanin to alter its electron structure. This, they believe, is an essential step for capturing radiation and converting it into a different form of energy to make food. Until now, melanin's biological role in fungi - if any - had been a mystery. Interestingly, the melanin in fungi is no different chemically from the melanin in our skin, leading Casadevall to speculate that melanin could be providing energy to skin cells.

And radiation-munching fungi could be on the menu for future space missions. "Since ionizing radiation is prevalent in outer space, astronauts might be able to rely on fungi as an inexhaustible food source on long missions or for colonizing other planets," noted Dadachova.

End-

I thought this might be helpfull for discovering a new energy source, melanin might be a good starting point for research.

Nice find Pyrodin, never heard of this before in fungi, very interesting! I´m sure melanin found in our skin can also use ionizing radiation to benefit our own metabolism. It has always ticked me off me how modern mainstream craptalk says that sunlight is bad for you, this is wrong, many scientific studies show that sunlight is very beneficial to life, it is not the sun that causes skin cancer but crap products like sunscreen because they prevent deep melanin production and thus the ionising radiation then spends its energy in cell destruction wheras the melanin if it´s allowed to form properly will down convert this high energy radiation into energy that the mitochondria can then use to go about their good business. Probably melanin in skin can also mop up all forms ionising radiation just like in that fungi, maybe we all need to work on our tans in order to survive the apocalypse that the old fart douchebag "leaders" might start. We have rain at the moment , but as soon as the sun comes back out I´ll be soaking it up as per usual.

Wow! Thanks for bringing this into my radar!

Using the keywords I found the original paper, it's here

Could this be why cockroaches are so resistant to radiation?triffid

fungus is the world oldest life form, it has been around longer then anything else on this planet.

some of it's fruit cause psyco active responses in our brain and unlock certain weird effects like telepathy.

i have done some experimenting with this and the effects are verry real.

the sober person i tried to reach confirmed she noticed " my spirit reached her " as she told me the day after the experiment.

the effect is increased when one takes the maoi breaker like syrian rue seed along with the fruits of the fungus (mushrooms)
The seed contains a component called telepathine and this enhances the effect.

it was sometimes a scary experience and i'm not going to do it again, but it does work and the persons you love can notice it even if you are miles away.

Well I would be only slightly suprised to find out people have some hidden abilities, i mean we use only a little of the available brain, so if you short circut the whole brain with a fungus, we might be able to use a little more of that thing we call a brain.

This is a myth, while I agree we may not use the entire brain, a large part of it is used, the brain is not just about intelligence and thinking, it's a complex control system with sensory centers, motor controllers, balance controls.
The problem is not capacity but connection, for best creativity and resourcefulness for instance the connection between both half of the brain need to be good.

The myth that we only use 10% of our brain is just that, a myth.

Maybe they're just growing more because of the heating... this hypothesis must be tested before claims that it is the ionizing radiation and not just the result of the heat it transfers...

You might just as well say that bacteria are supercharged by microwaves if you constantly heat up a culture at a rate sufficient to keep it at a higher temperature at which the bacteria thrive.

@RunningBare

I've heard that before too, I would say that there are quite a lot of people who only use 10%, but on average your right.
Don't know too much about the brain, maybe we use all of it and just can't tell we are using it. Anything is possible, I think we are a little too sure of ourselves when it comes to knowing our body and also our understanding of the world in general. :)
