Here is my favorite grid that I use in wheel math for figuring out if a wheel is worth a build or not. It is a simple design but what you do, is to make a clear copy of it and lay over your drawings. Up rite position to count the gravity line + and - then you turn it sideways with the + side up for the keel count and the you add all the +'s up and then the -'s up and if you have more plus than minus you might have a design worth building. Other factors come into play after that. Frictions, reactions, and so on. Unfortunately my grid doesn't help with this but experience does. You can do more angles with the grid for a closer count of pluses and minuses. The grid is set up for clockwise rotation. Just reverse for counterclockwise rotation.

I do more effects testing before I build a wheel even though some can still be called wheels. So I can say when you add all those test and wheels together they would be about 65 to 70. This evening I am finishing up a joint project and hope to have good news. Some others that I am doing, take a fair bit more time to build. This means that I am manufacturing parts to be used. My one that has hit 200 rpm but has the timing problem. I am having to forge out special parts and I have to have a calm time when I am working on something that precision Then I can test it to see if I am correct. Others they just take time to build, and I don't get that much time outside of my living work. I write on forums during like my lunch break like I am doing now or the beginning or end of the day.

To show how the grids work I overlaid the my grids on MT24 in both directions to calculate the positive points and the negative points and here are the pictures of the results. for a clockwise turn it has a total of a negative 17.30 points that it won't run. But it would make a better reaction counterclockwise with only a negative 10.20 points. But still proves to be a non runner. (Forgive me for forgetting to put the r on lower. :-[)

The lower picture is sideways for counting upper and lower counts.

I am bumping the grid for those who need to copy. This will help them figure out to build or not. It only helps to show placement only it does not account for reactions.
Here is another design of mine, that tends to show over balance but it will not spin due to the Keel factor. Just another experience of what we have to overcome in this game. This one was using pendulum shifters for the hammers.

Here is something of interest in relation to secondary oscillations.
Note that the flywheel and slider powered by a pendulum of 20 kg have a combined mass of 150 kg. One would think that there would be very little movement, if any, but the simulation shows otherwise.
Also take note of the chaotic behaviour of the device.

I am bringing up this tread again to start a change and to explore why so many wheel designs don't work. The gravity and keel grid is a tool for exploring wheel designs for possible builds. This is for already opened sourced designs to learn from. And we can explore why and learning from previous builds and ideas
For instance this wheel has shown up in many variation and none of them work. Here is the reason why. The dynamics of the weights transfer to the circle oval and other shaped ramps and act as the only wheel. What people are calling the wheel becomes the guides only.

Here is one of my wheels from the early days of building. Being of all steel construction and with advanced shifters on an old idea. I am posting this one to discus why did it not run. I already know, but different views could have a good addition to understanding the problems of gravity wheel approaches.
