Hi All,
A new artificial heart has been released
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,27574,25665418-3102,00.html
One look at it and I thought "that looks like a self running magnetic motor"
Reading the article it says that it is "Driven by tiny electromagnets" but I see no reference to a power source.
Looked up the original paper still no reference to power supply
http://eprints.qut.edu.au/17851/1/c17851.pdf
The project was pretty much self funded with no government support, is this one they had to release???
Please have a look and comment or have I missed the power source??
Regards
KM
maybe it's something like this one...http://www.aist.go.jp/MEL/soshiki/tokatsu/annu1997/bio.htm
This is a drawing of the device
Great find ;)
It would be interesting to see if the magnets on the rotor disk were arranged as a Halbach Array; since this apparently uses a magnetic bearing.
Also of interest, is that this device was created in Australia, outside of the U.S.
And that they have had a hard time obtaining funding for it.... Usually anything to do with artificial hearts is well funded from a variety of sources; it is the "holy grail" of Cardiology research and has been for over 30 years.
Also, i wonder what their tests have seen regarding the effects of the magnetic field on the blood ;)
