Title: Material suppliers list - a definitive guide
Post by: NTesla on June 17, 2010, 08:38:58 PM
I have an idea:

Create a document attached to this thread that is constantly updated with a list of material suppliers - if anyone wants to buy something e.g magnets, cores etc they can refer to this list instead of trolling through lots of different threads.

Sound like a plan?  ;D

I would be happy to maintain such a list if people can post information about suppliers here. I'm thinking of having a table of product types and suppliers, URLs, Contacts, notes about them, recommendations etc.

Apologies if such an idea has already been done - I can't find it.

Attached is my first draft - lots more to add - please let me know!

For some reasons I cannot modify my original post, otherwise I would put it there.

Keep up the good work, you may find that there are some websites which supply an enormity of items.

Digikey.com (http://www.digikey.com) for electrical and related.
MSCdirect.com (http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/nnsrhm) for materials, tooling, etc.

Both of these will send you a free catalog, and both catalogs are foot-smashing huge.

anyone know of any suppliers for Mumetal or permalloy that is not just super thin sheets?

I am working on a project that could greatly benefit from this, but all I have found are those sheets for shielding audio components. no where near thick enough,

From what I am seeing the backing plates to the magnets in hard drives are permalloy, so I may try using a massive fresnel lens I have to melt it. if I can I will maybe make a howto video on the process including how to make molds to drop the molten metal into for your designs.

but a good supplier of say .01 to .063 thick sheets that we can cut and form ourselves would be super helpful for sure I would guess.
