Thanks.   I bet if you combine these homemade caps with some IGBT's you are ready for some serious high energy fun.  Beer not included.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IGBT

Large IGBT modules typically consist of many devices in parallel and can have very high current handling capabilities in the order of hundreds of amps with blocking voltages of 6,000 V.

Thanks for the link.  The only question I have is this:  When they talked about Farads, they mentioned every sub-order available except....Farads. (pico, micro...etc.)  The super caps I am playing with are measured in Farads like .22, 3, 5.5, etc.  So, I guess this article does not really cover super caps then?  My interest lies in the way super caps perform like a battery without dumping all of the charge at once.  I can charge one of my .22F super caps from my earth battery and light an led with it (after disconnecting from the charging source) for over two hours.  does anyone know how we can build super caps then?  Or, a way for regular caps that perform like a battery?  thanks.

A one farad capacitor is a huge capacitor.Use panes of glass to separate the sheets of metal and try to find online calculators to help you with the rest of the building.Mineral oil is said to be helpful too.triffid

interesting, is there a formula that one could use to see how many mAh a CAP can deliver? like a ratio between F and Ah ? In your example you have an LED and a .22F cap (how many volts?) , have you measured how much current does the LED consume?

I was also thinking about this lately. Probably arrays of caps would do the job, or...?

@ Prometei:

The volts on this cap are 5.5.  I don't really know what the mA's are for the led.  The Radio shack packaging that came with this one says 1.5 vdc and 20 mA but I have been lighting it with a lot less than that. (as far as amps go)  These things work more like batteries than capacitors in my experience with them. I don't know about a formula, I am in over my head on many aspects of this.

hey folks, I've bumped into this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFcylXFGTgk

Batacitor, interesting concept, too bad they don't explain how it works  :(

Interesting video and I share your disappointment in no explanation or drawings on how it works.  This looks a lot like a device I ran across that is supposed to cut down your home electric bills by 50%.  If I can find the link..I will post it below...might be related technology.

from their FAQ

11. How does the Powersaver 8 work?
All electrical supply is subject to surges from time to time, which result in spikes or parasitic peaks that cannot be used by your appliances as working power. These spikes simply waste your electricity. Worse still, they result in overheating, which shortens the life of your appliances and wiring. In the most extreme cases this can cause burns, blow outs and power cuts. Our Powersaver 8 uses a capacitor system to stabilize the flow of electricity. It reduces the spikes in the supply, protecting against surges. The system improves the power factor of your electricity and reduces your electricity bill by on average 20 - 40%.

So they are using caps, hmm, I wonder when they will post the schematics , ehehe :)

I have read their materials a few times and, I am guessing about this, I believe they are saying that while your electric meter will register (and you will be charged for) any and all of those spikes, even though they are useless to our electrical appliances and sometimes harmful.  The thing that makes no sense to me is how you can plug one of their gizmos into one plug in your house (on one isolated circuit) and cause the meter to be effected on the entire house circuits?  Seems to me to do any good it would have to be installed either before the meter, or just after it on the main line coming into the home.  As I said, this may be real, or a scam, I don't know.  Just tossing it out there.

That type of construction is for higher voltages. A 1 Farad of that type would fill a room.

There are basically 2 things you can do to increase capacitance of a pair of plates - reduce the spacing or insert a material with a high dielectric constant. If memory seves barium titanate has a very high constant, several thousand times higher than air or glass.

here's another company manufacturing such a product it claims to remove peak which are causing additional heat in your appliance . the system is called Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVSS)

For more detail check out their explanation on http://www.kpenergy.ca/KPProducts.pdf

The titanates range from 50 to 30000.I dont know about barium titanate per say But water is 80 and sand is about 4.2.Maybe this info helps someone here?Triffid
