In general, as long as you don't saturate the core, then the shape is not too important, though the internal flux distribution for square cores will obviously be a bit different. In practice, I wouldn't be too concerned about that though for a proof-of-concept design. Are you planning to use that core for an MEG driven by a JT?

That wire looks to me like steel fencing wire, as opposed to iron fencing wire.
Why do you reckon it is iron?

it's rebar tie wire, although strongly magnetic (stronger attraction to a magnet than a ferrite core).. researching what the composition is
