Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made rapid in-roads into our world since the late 1980.

Current internet networking capabilities have taken smart phones and their apparent AI to a new level
Progressive inroads into simulated consciousness in AI will eventually lead to full conscious artificial intelligence.

You might enjoy a recent movie made on this topic that deals with the complexities of engineered consciousness.

I see its similarity to OU in that it would entail the same leap frog jump over the boundaries of our currently known physical world understanding.  In those terms, engineered energy would also introduce some serious complexities we might not be able to handle without evolving.
