Free Windows XP Backup solution with DriveImage XML and UBCD4Win XP LiveCD.

Hi All,
the last days I fought with getting a very good backup solution to work
for Windows XP.

The free program I used was DriveImage XML
http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm

with which you can backup whole partitions directly from within Windows
also to external USB drives or other drives.

You can also backup drive C: where the Windows XP installation is normally on.

The only problem was the Restore problem.

DriveImage XML does not come with any BootCD for this reason,
so if your partition C: crashes, where your
Windows XP installation was located,
you needed to hook off first your HD to another PC and restore there
the partition C: via a working Windows XP installation.


But now I have found a much better solution:

Booting Windows XP from a LiveCD or from a Live USB Stick.

This can be done by using the free program

Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win Version 3.22

The problem then was, that this is no ready to burn BootCD
due to the problem with the Microsoft WindowsXP licenses...

So this program uses your own Windows XP CD to
create a bootable Windows XP LiveCD with many
tools program on there and also with
DriveImage XML.

So you can boot then this WinXP LiveCD or the WinXP USB stick and run DriveImage XML
from the CD or from the USB stick and Restore the partion-backup  directly to
your build in harddisk.

So far so nice, if my Windows XP CD would have worked with Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win Version 3.22....

It did not work and after a few tests I have found a downloadable free Windows Server 2003 R2 trial
version, which also works with Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win Version 3.22.

Here is the Windows Server 2003 R2 trial
version:

and then take the first Image file:

first English ISO image file file name: X13-05665.img

When you have downloaded this, rename it to name.iso
and use WinRAR or simular packers to decompress it to a
temporary directory.

Then start
Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win Version 3.22
and go to the plugins button
and DESELECT all settings and plugins where it says Multiboot.
Multiboot is not compatibe with this Windows 2003 version..

Also disable the Dial-In network.

Okay, now close the plugin settings and then
press the button to create the ISO CD.

Then after a few minutes it has created a BartPE directory and
an ISO file which you can just burn for instance with Nero.

This is then a working Windows XP BootCD with also the DriveImage XML
tool on there.

If you want to have a bootable USB drive, just then afterwards start
the UB*.exe program,
( It is the second EXE program in the
UBCD4Win folder, sorry
am not at that PC don´t remember the exact name right now)

that is in the same folder as the
Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win Version 3.22
and it will generate a bootable USB stick flash drive for you.

That is now a perfect Windows XP Live version with many nice tools
to repair WIndows XP installations or fix harddrive or boot errors.
