Coils for pulse motors

ive been tinkering around with a pulse motor and have been trying to get the coil to trip the transistor. im using a small coil that when the magnets are hand spun generate maybe .2 volt. to attempt to get these coils to work with this setup i wanted to add current to the base of the transistor (the coils themselfs do not make the current needed apparently to activate my transistor.) i used a potentiometer to help add just the right current but could not get it to work it seems the more current is put on the base the more it energizes but does not energize enough to keep the motor running from the coils.

my question is do you find that if the coil is not big enough or has enough turns to make the current then it is useless in these motors? i am using a npn transistor which is activated by the positive current. any input would be appreciated.

suffice it to say i didnt expect this much trouble making a simple pulse setup with batteries 2 coils (one to trip) and a transistor :-p

I had the same problem with my first motor and the symptoms went away with a set of bigger magnets I bought from a person that quit building his motor.
Now the motor start with just a litle turn of the rotor.

I will look at the links you posted and see if i can glean some idea's.I think the joule thief circuit has plenty off developments yet to be discovered.I am still trying to get over the rpm's im getting out off a battery my camera refuses to work on so im going to dig a bit deeper on this and see where it leads.Thanks again.
