Lawrence, would you please do the following for me? It's simple and easy.

Pretend that I am an eight-year-old in your class trying to build your Joule Thief and interpret its output. A bright, thinking eight-year-old.

Teacher, please take the photo of the output waveform you show in Slide 9, and just draw a straight horizontal line across it at 1.3 volts (the battery supply voltage).

Now you will see our JT waveform peaks above this line, and valleys below it.

Teacher, please help me estimate the areas in the peaks above the line. Is this area enough to fill in the valleys below the line? To overfill them?

In other words, is the AVERAGE output voltage greater or less than a steady 1.3 volts?

like i said, keep hoping for an answer from Tseung, you wont get one, nor will he do the tests you asked, all he knows is that "this peak is bigger than that peak = OU !! "

Yes indeed TinselKoala made an awesome little clip there.  It's quite striking how the spike appears in his voltage waveform when he moves his ground clip down the wire and further away from the resistor.  It's very evident how this can mess up your measurements.

Now, I am going to go slightly off-top and pose a related question for the masses.  The question is why does that voltage spike appear when he moves the ground clip?

Please no cheating from some of the contributors to the forum that we suspect will know the answer.  You are excluded from the pop quiz.  Why does the spike appear?

Note that if you understand why the spike appears you should be able to appreciate the point made in TK's clip that much more.

what would have been quite striking was tinselkoala actually showing the whole picture. like comparing scope shots showing the trace with and without the 1ohm resistor...
