Can someone point me to where I could find out how to wire up a transistor to my pulse motor so my reed switch won't burn out....

thanks a million

You can see the principle here:  http://www.simplemotor.com/tmotor.htm

to reduce base current it is advised to connect a 4.7 kOhm to 10 kOhm resistor in series with the reed switch.

coil here is in the emitter,  you may place it in the collector too.

be sure to use a transistor with correct current/voltage ratings for your task,  thinking of back EMF voltage pulse too.
